Another solution: Use synthetic oil & gear lube. Yes it's spendy, but
if the oil's so thick that you can't shift, think what the lack of
lubrication is doing to your gears & bearings. Not to mention the extra
fuel economy you'll get from the reduced friction. The synthetics don't
change viscosity down to -40 or so. If I still lived in a climate cold
enough that it mattered, there's no way I'd run dino oils in the winter.
In fact, I decided recently to switch to all synthetics when my current
supply of dino oil is used up, with the possible exception of my diesel
unless I can get a real good filter system for it.
