Re: ihc-digest V5 #103 MSD Ignition
Should you install a MSD ignition. YES!! My '77 just passed the smog
test at 115 ppm HC and 1.3% CO. The standards for a new current vehicle
are 220 ppm HC and 1.2 % CO.
Runs better, starts better.
On the shakedown run of 100 miles of interstate, 5 miles of 2 lane
blacktop and 1/4 mile of 8" mud I got 16.4 mpg. And this with the old
T-Quad which is running very rich in the right hand bore.
I've been running Mobil Super Premium. I'm carrying 15 deg advance and
have the vacuum advance hooked directly to the manifold. No pings!
Next will try regular and see how much advance it will carry.
This engine really likes a lot of advance. It runs at 0 BTDC but runs
much better at 15 BTDC (premium gas, I know costs a lot)
BTW if you run few tankfulls of the Mobil Super 93 octane, look down the
carb throat where the gas hits. Cleaner than a new dime, just amazing.
Top of carb where gas don't gow is still black and nasty from the old
backfiring ignition.
