Re: freaking travelall - the saga continues

Luke,

I hate to add to your confusion, but the description of the way your carb is
acting sure makes it sound like it's running *lean*, not rich. I've always
encountered backfiring in lean burn conditions, but I could be wrong. I'm
guessing your carb is just plain dirty and needs a good overhaul and cleaning.
Don't let that scare you though... you can simply buy a rebuild kit at any
good Holley dealer and do it yourself with the help of a more experienced
freund. The carb needs to be completely taken apart and soaked overnight in a
bucket of carburetor cleaner designed for just that. Make sure you remove any
trace of old gasket material, but *do not* scrape on the carb with any sort of
tool that will damage, gouge or scratch it. Then you rinse the carb cleaner
off with very hot water, blow dry with compressed air and reassemble per the
instructions in the kit. You'd be surprised how many ills this operation can
cure. The varnishes that accumulate from the gasoline can build up over time
restricting the fuel flow to cause a lean condition. Adjusting the *idle*
mixture as you did will not do a thing to help your lean "cruise" condition.

It's usually called the "throttle plate," but we know what you mean. <grin>

I used to drive an ambulance for my local volunteer fire department in the
town where I grew up in East Texas. We picked up a guy one time that had a
carburetor backfire in his face. He was apparently hovering over the top of
the open carb pouring gasoline into it while someone was cranking the engine.
Just seeing his charred face and listening to his screams made a permanent
impression on my young mind!

If you lived close enough to me Luke, I'd be happy to help you rebuild your
Holley. They're really a cinch to do.

Happy holidays,

John
