Bryan,
The shop manual calls it the "pressure relief" and it is in the bottom of
the oil pump. It appears to consist of a spring (which I knew) and a
short piston like device that limits the oil pressure when it exceeds
whatever the spring is set for. The parts reside in a cylinder that kind
of bulges out from the bottom of the oil pump itself. You wouldn't need
to remove the oil pump to inspect and clean the pressure relief, but once
you get the pan off it doesn't really make sense not to also check the
pump. Obviously, based on recent digests, if you do that, a gasket for
the oil pump becomes an issue.
