Tim,

I made a replacable rig from 10-32 threaded rod and a 10-32 
coupling nut from my local hardware store.  They always break
because the shifter actually bends the cable as you push/pull
on the shifter lever.  Watch the action with the cover off and
you're bound to see what I mean.  I did this about 5 years ago
and only had to check it once, for adjustment.

I've got a story about when I came over a hill in a blinding
snowstorm in the white mountains of Arizona about 5 years ago.

Email me privately and I'll type it up, then send it to the
digest.  I don't have time to type it all now, but it's a 
doozie.  Basically I came over a hill at the brisk speed of
about 15mph, to see a cop writing up a station wagon that had
t-boned a Bronco ('85 or so) in the middle of the road.

Came over the hill was all set to pass the cop et. al., then
cought some traction from the dirt on the side of the plowed
area, and suddenly became aimed at the sideof the wagon.

Brodsky's winch bumper ko's the side of the wagon (about 3 feet in)
cleans out the back right corner of the Bronco, and I never got
charged a dime from the accident due to the pre-existing accident.

I came about 5 inches from hitting the cop car whew.
I think the wagon had to get a tow truck.  The driver was out 
of the car or he'd be dead now.

All I had was a slight radiator leak, and a little tear in the
bumper strip on my chrome bumper.  (the little black door trim 
style piece)  Drove home 200 miles.  Can't say as much for the
others.

A couple of things. It seems I forgot to give my web page address. Well, here

Secondly, I know I've enjoyed immensely, reading the various stories that
have been told in the digest, like Art's "Me vs the Semi" story. I was
thinking that I'd like to have a place on one of my web pages that has the
latest story on it, etc. Credit will be given to the author of course. I'd
rotate them through. Is there anybody out there that would prefer that I not
use their stories ? Of course I can e-mail the author for permission each
time, and if that's what people prefer, I'll do it. What about in a club
newsletter.

I'll go you one better.  There is a guy here in Tucson that has,
You're never gonna believe this one!, a Full size ford supercab
F350 chassis on the bottom w/ 460 and a 5 speed, with, get ready:

A '64 Scout 80 on top.  There's like 4 feet of frame and driveline out
either side of the scout and the thing looked so goofed, I wouldn't 
trust it to carry my worst enemy in.  The axles are a good 8" from the
ends of the scout, and it had 35"s on it.  He says it's got lot's of power,
all that on only 140"+ wheelbase!  My scout II looked like a hotwheels
in front of this thing!  I wish I could see it again to get a picture,
but it was just out of control.  No glass except for the windshield, and
I think the floor boards were gone so you could see the street while
driving, like the monster trucks with the ladder frames.

Their is a guy down here in San Diego who is running 74 IH full size 3/4
ton driveline under his 1962 model 80. Looks like something out of Mad Max
with Swamper Boggers etc...Tons of work he did himself including installing
the full size truck springs, 345, 4spd and 205, with a dodge ps box and
misc steering column.

Nick,

check the relay under the dash by the ash tray, if the contacts are bad
it may act like you describe.

The only part I haven't checked is the ignition switch, because I 
can't figure out how to get at it without pulling the column.
