Couldn't resend your neat ascii drawing.

I have been using a similar method for years.  I use two hammers, one as an
anvil on one side of the ball joint and the other to do the hitting.  This
puts all of the energy into the joint and takes up the stress that would
otherwise be transmitted into other things,  especially when using this
method on tie rod ends	.
